Journaling for your Mental Health

There are many ways you can express your thoughts and feelings, and in this blog post Sophie, No5 Counsellor, shares how journaling has supported her!


I love journaling! Writing my thoughts and feelings down on paper has always been very soothing for me. My journal doesn’t judge me, no matter what I write. My journal is there, just for me, to scribble down my wildest dreams, angriest rants, and genius (well, I like to think so) ideas.


I first started writing a journal when I started Secondary School and was having a very difficult time fitting in. In a world that felt chaotic and out of control, I could safely write down all that was bothering me and all that I wished for the future. It was cathartic, creative, and fun! Writing in my journal was like spilling everything to a super supportive friend.


Why does writing your feelings down help? When approached to write this article, I would have said, “I don’t know why it helps, but it does. I always feel more calm after writing. I feel more at peace for some reason!


I looked into why writing a journal helps me, and many other people, feel more empowered, reflective, and calm.


Here are 5 reasons why journaling rocks!


  1. A journal won’t be mean or judgemental. You can write about absolutely anything you like.
  2.  Writing down all those little things that have bothered you, or excited you over the past few days can get them out of your head. Kind of like decluttering the bedroom of your mind.
  3. Writing about past experiences can give you more clarity about why you are the way you are now – and who you might like to be in the future.
  4. Full of emotions that are making you feel overwhelmed? You can release them all into your journal!
  5. Finally – and most importantly, I think – there are NO RULES. Journaling isn’t school. No-one will criticise your spelling mistakes or grammar errors. You can sketch, you can doodle, you can write song lyrics, you can write emotional text messages to people that you’ll never actually send irl, you can type it out on a password protected document or voice note on your phone. You can do whatever you like, because there is no ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ way to journal. You can even ‘destroy’ your journaling piece once you are finished – it doesn’t have to exist forever!
